The tenth Annual General Meeting of Zermatt Bergbahnen AG was held in Zermatt today. Despite the difficult economic situation and the euro crisis, the company can look back on a successful, though not always easy, year.
Three winter sports resorts banking on Slow Slopes. The Swiss National Accident Insurance Fund (Suva), the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (bfu) and Swiss Cableways (SBS) are promoting leisurely skiing and safety on the runs. In 2009/2010, as part of a three-year pilot study, designated “Slow Slopes” were introduced for beginners and skiers who like to take it easy.
The Solar Restaurant on the Matterhorn glacier paradise (Klein Matterhorn) has already been accoladed with the Swiss Solar prize for 2010. Today in Berlin, it also received the European award. The solar restaurant opened by Zermatt Bergbahnen AG on the south flank of the mountain for the 2008/09 winter season produces all the electricity for heating and ventilation using the photovoltaic system built into the facade.
As of this weekend, 80% of the prepared pistes at the Matterhorn ski paradise will be open. That means over 200 km of pistes for snow sport fans to indulge their passion in conditions normally found in mid-winter.

The Annual Congress of the International Commission for Alpine Rescue (IKAR/CISA) is taking place in Zermatt from the 22nd to the 27th September. Around 300 participants from 31 different countries are expected to attend this event, with the goal of providing an intensive exchange of information about the various aspects of mountain rescue and about recent innovations.
On 21 April the "Matterhorn glacier paradise" tourist centre on the Klein Matterhorn (Little Matterhorn) was officially awarded the MINERGIE-P® certificate. At 3,883 m.a.s.l. State Councillor Thomas Burgener, head of the Department for Health, Social Services and Energy in the canton of Valais, presented Zermatt Bergbahnen AG with the coveted certificate.
For the benefit of the Zermatt Alpine sport holiday-maker, Zermatt Bergbahnen AG has purchase the first machine ever able to produce snow irrespective of the weather. The machine was manufactured in Israel.
At 2883 and 3883 metres above sea level, the building of exceptional structures is underway, which will spark interest beyond the borders of Switzerland: the new Monte Rosa chalet along the Gorner Glacier and the Glacier restaurant at Matterhorn glacier paradise (Klein Matterhorn).
